Design
My work reflects a taste for simple elegance based on the natural beauty of the materials and the absence of gratuitous ornament. I aim to express the essential spirit of the guitar at its best, through honest workmanship that highlights pure design without getting in its way.
In a time when many occupations arise and become obsolete in less than a generation, guitar making is wonderful in being both timeless and at the same time utterly contemporary. As a guitar designer my challenge is to balance these two simultaneous realities, to celebrate the eternal nature of the guitar while speaking to its ongoing vitality through meaningful innovation. Sometimes the result is weighted more toward the instrument's tradition, sometimes toward its timeliness, but these two complementary aspects are always both present in my work, one either grounding, or emerging from, the other.
